I recently read that the '75 Copper Metallic 2.0L was very rare color option.
I had one in the 1980s, it was in perfect condition with the exception of a weird dent at the top/corner of the left-rear body panel. Does anyone know how rare this car/color combination was? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif) Thank you, CTC911CTC |

Go to Rennbow. Rarity of all Porsche factory colors are rated in paint cans. 5 paint cans is rare, 1 paint can is common. I'd guess Gold Metallic is 3 or 4 paint cans.

Here's where the Rennbow rarity rating is a bit confusing. Ex: Sepia Brown was a relatively common color on 911's but was PTS on 914's. Same thing with Copper Metallic. It's common on other P cars but a one year only special order color on 914's. |

It's common on other P cars but a one year only special order color on 914's. yeah rennbow does not bother really telling you what color was on what porsche and what grade of option it was. they make it a bit murky to understand. there is a simple answer to sepia brown as you note.. only a standard color for the 911s and not available for the 914/4 or 6. sure you could get it on a 914. by special special order. even more $ than a special order paint. you could get anything you wanted if you were prepared to pay. but in 72. you paid standard money for sepia brown on a 911 but you paid stupid money to get it on a 914. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) worth remembering that special order paint, meant one of the metallics when it came to the 914s. usually 4 metallics were on offer during the years the 914s were being made. those 4 metallics were the standard tick the box item to upspec paint. paint to sample and a paint color from the 911 range was another level again in terms of $. also during those years 70-72 the 914 had its own range of colors whether 4 or 6 separate from the 911. there was only a partial overlap of colors available for both 911 and 914. during 73-74 the colors for the 914 are not shared with the 911. they are all VW colors and shared with the karmann ghia. during 75-76 again they are VW colors and shared with the scirocco. thats when copper metallic comes up. and it comes up as a standard tick the box upspec termed special order paint. they may have used a copper metallic on the 911s around that time but if so it was co-incidental and may or may not have been precisely the same shade paint. ---------- the most common color back then in aus was mustard for a VW. they were every second VW in my teenage years. and an awful lot of 911s of that era were also mustard. but you rarely see them these days at car shows or on the street. when it came to restoring time it appeared to be the last color anyone wanted to paint their car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) thats pretty funny i reckon. what was once as common as muck when the cars were new down here has today become a rarity to see. i wouldn't mind betting there was relatively speaking quite a few metallic copper 914s back in the day when it would have been a very cool and fashionable color. but few survived the updating 80s/90s when it went out of fashion big time. i remember a stunning palma green metallic 75 with a white interior that used to live in the apartment building opposite me back when i lived in chicago in the late 80s. it was a beauty. but i never ever saw another one. i think if you are talking metallics from the 75 year, team that up with a white interior and if it survived, you do have a very rare 914. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) I've often wondered how many original Delphi Green Metallics(L99A) were made when Dad bought mine off the dealer's lot new in 1973? He paid an extra $206 for the "special" color, only offered on 73~74 914s as I understand the history. |
