All,
I am looking to change the oil pump as a way to up my oil pressure. I understand that this may well not help, but having a new oil pump around is OK.
With that in mind, what are my options? I will pull the motor but hope to not split the case. Is this even possible? Which pump?

Thanks

Peter

I have an old melling in mine. Works great but I know there is some hate out there on them.

I have an old melling in mine. Works great but I know there is some hate out there on them.

Melling has 30mm pump gears and is a good part of the reason you get away with runnning multi-grade oil 0W-40 if I recall?

I ran one once back in the 80s on 10W-30 for a while.

The problem is the cast iron pump and the aluminum case expand at vastly different rates. Any “leakage” is internal to the case just like the undersize T1 pumps. I used to get low oil pressure light flicker after extended high speed runs when pulling off the freeway. Would resolve itself as the engine cooled.

Eventually went back to a OEM T4 pump. Problem solved.

The biggest issue we are glossing over in these threads is that the oil pump is only 1 part of a system that includes up to 3 relief valves, bearing clearances, oil viscosity, temperatures the engine normally operates, and whether or not external coolers and plumbing have been added.

There really is no one perfect solution.
