was watching a great little documentary on the development of the wankel engine by mazda in the 1960s. this image came up at a point where discussion shifted to japanese focus on the US market and the foreign car "invasion". i grabbed a screenshot.

You are right about the rust.
In 1970, I moved to Stuttgart and in December bought a 914/6. Hahn Porsche had 5 or 6 914/6s on their lot downtown that had been demonstrator cars given to dealers. The cars were returned to the factory for sale at about 70% of new price which was a tremendous discount for a year old Porsche with 20,000KM. I looked them over and remember seeing most of them had rust on the sheet metal under the battery.
I picked one that had the color I liked instead of one without rust. Turned out not to make much difference because I sold it four years and a lot of miles later before the rust became a structural problem.
Attached picture was taken in January,1971. Car had the temporary US military license plates. Attached Image

cool photo.

and.......if i am not mistaken thats an NSU prinz parked beside you? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

i think the way it went is the chief stylist at NSU eventually went on to join BMW.
and......that belt line right around the car became a bmw signature.
but originally an NSU thing.
