i moved out of the inner city i could not stand it anymore. down to 30kmh.
thats not mph, thats kph.
dickheads on pushbikes pass you on the left (thats right side where you are).

out here near the peripheric (fancy french for ring road (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) its mostly the old urban limit of 60kmh (35mph in USA "imperial") or 50kmh.

our interstate highways are mainly 110 kmh and strictly enforced. cameras and camera cars everywhere. we have all ceased to call it a police state because the cops are nowhere to be seen. all automated enforcement and contract camera car companies.
you might be tempted to call it a nanny state, but only if joseph stalin was your grandmother.

the tickets are off the planet. serious $ $250 start and headed up to $1k. + demerit points. at 30 kmh over they impound the car. you lose your license.
they might even crush the car, depends on how much beyond 30 kmh+the limit you are.

and to add insult to injury they have started lowering the speed limit on secondary country roads to 80kmh. it used to be 100kmh.

i am glad i was born when i was and got to enjoy driving when driving was driving.

meanwhile the idiots who can't drive but have cars and keys to them continue to crash their cars, roll overs, head ons you name it - all at a snails pace.

90 mph (145 kmh) if on interstate down here is instant impound and give us your license territory.

but i do have a secret location down here, close-ish to the "garage" for 6.30 am sunday morning wind outs in the 914 and the renault. i call it the back straight. don't tell anyone or they will put a camera in.

Sounds similar to here. 50km/h in town, 80 outside of town and 120 on motorways (where they are not limited to 100 or less, more and more areas like that). Other countries around me similar, 50 km/h is virtually universal inside town limits, France has 80 or 90 outside (depending on the département) and 130 on motorways. Italy similar. Only in Germany are there still stretches of unlimited on the Autobahn, about an hour north of Basel starts one section that I occasionally take going to my friend the 914 specialist. There the 'teener will cruise nicely at 140-150 km/h, had it up to 170 for a bit, but didn't want to push it....

Fines in this country are also very expensive. Lots of photo radar. A few weeks ago in the 914 I got "blitzed" by one in a 50 kph zone going at 59. 10 days later the fine shows up in the mail - 120 CHF (about $150 US). They took off 3 kph for "margin of error", so it was actually for 56 in a 50.

How much it costs and what the risks are depends on whether you are in town, out of town or on the motorway. 66 kph or over in a 50 is $1000 and you can already lose your license for a month. 75 kph in a 50 zone can land you in jail. A little less stringent out of town or on the motorway, but if you are really excessive they can confiscate the car and sell/destroy it (in addition to losing license and jail time).

I have to be really careful on the bike... With 160 ponies/225 kg, a slight twist of the throttle and I'm in "jail zone". (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)
