Pulled the engine for an eventual 2.0 replacement and tackling my laundry list of "while it's out" tasks. Hell hole is the first up. Made good progress on cutting out the old rusted portion of the engine shelf and revealing the rot.
I'm of two minds on the patch panels. The perfectionist in me wants to cut out sections back to clean metal and flush patch, but access is a pain for available cutting tools. The lazy rationalist in me says that the car isn't perfect anyway and to make a U shaped panel that conforms to the firewall section, runs across the wheel well and up the long. Easier to plug weld then stitch and better overlap with good metal. Any suggestions? Attached image(s)

I think you already know the answer; do it once, do it right and never worry about it again. As this is a extremely common issue, most people looking for a 914, focus on this area first. Let your perfectionist nature run free here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
