Not remotely suggesting this is applicable to the sports car / 914 driving experience. But the notion of solving infinite gear ratios (CVT) with a planetary gearset is interesting from an engineering perspective!

I have a 2nd gen volt, I think they call it 'torque assist'. There is some contraption that allows direct torque assist from the gas motor to the wheels but under normal circumstances it's just a generator motor.
