Can anyone tell me what this is? '75 1.8L mounted behind a black steel bubble low on the frunk core support in front of the fuel tank (driver's side). I thought it might be the fuel filter, but it just doesn't look right.

That's the fuel pump, the fuel filter is upstream of that connected to the line that comes from the tank.
Tank --> Fuel Filter --> Fuel Pump --> to the fuel lines to the back of the car. |
