This '75 is my second 914, the first was a '72 that was great while it lasted. I bought both rust free cars in New Mexico and was fortunate enough to gather several loads of parts over the years. This '75 is a general conglomeration of things like put together on a 914.
I found an ad on Craigslist posted by an American Muscle Car guy who was threatening to scrap the 1.8L 914 after running the ad several times with no takers. I got it for $500 plus it came with fender flares that were never installed. Attached image(s)

Those taller pistons look like old NPR or AA performance ,from memory a big heavy piston for a bus motor , really old tech compared to the new ones you have , also they aren't suited for your application .
Appears you have worn ring lands with those old pistons this is very likely hence your oil usage . Do you have the barrels for the new AA pistons to go together if so fit those you will be good . Cheers. |

Cheers. Thank you. I've taken things apart and cannot get the oil ring of the new pistons to compress enough to go in the cylinder. The "wavy" spacer ring is not allowing the two on each side to compress enough to fit..... is there a trick? The rings on each side of the wavy spacer ring fit the cylinder perfectly when I fit them without the wavy spacer. I didn't have this issue compressing the Deves rings. Thx in advance |

Thx in advance Are you talking about the rings that came with the new AA pistons you have ? ,there should be instructions for ring fitting if you bought the complete kit ? Old kits had bad ring fit ,the newer stuff is sorted from what I have read ,might pay to contact AA and see what they say ,cheers |
