The essential question is how the bushings function. Do they regulate suspension movement in shear or are they solely serving a cushioning function? If it is the latter, a high quality non-petroleum based grease should function well while also serving a corrosion resistant role as well. Thoughts?

Still gotta love your avatar photo. Since the thread seems to be headed that way anyhow. Detergent won’t actually evaporate, nor glycerin. Not sure about diesel.

Glycerin is used all the time within the automotive industry to assemble press fit rubber bushings. It is used by the OEMs as well as the supply base. The bulk of the of glycerin is squeezed out by the press fit, the remaining thin film between the press fit parts is absorbed by the rubber (usually ~24 hours) you will find the bushing grips very tightly and will not rotate. Glycerin without exposure to water becomes tacky & sticky. External squeeze out will be washed away by water.

Glycerin is a good assembly lube for rubber bushings.

If you are queasy about the wife or your buddy’s finding Astroglide or KY-Jelly in your shop, here’s a commercial non-glycerin product specifically intended for bushing and rubber hoses.
