AAA Westway’s magazine does this one page recurring feature called Showroom. When it debuted about eight years ago, I tried to get my tribute to my dad‘s light ivory car in the feature. The people who screen the submissions always immediately got back to me and said it’s a great story and they’re gonna hand it off to the author Peter.

Months would go by then nothing. I tried several times then gave up. I passed the car down to my 19-year-old a couple years ago. Gotta keep the hobby going with the next generation. I’m only 60, but I felt I had to do it because she totally became a car girl because of this 914 just like me when I was 10.

Well, I tried one last time figuring Peter would never do the story. Kind of felt like he was putting all his buddies in his feature. What do you know. A few weeks later, the email arrived—he was on board. For such a small story he asked a ton of questions of every one of my daughters and myself. They sent a professional photographer with tall ladders and high-end camera equipment. They even had a fact checker.

My girls appeared in the Orange County California edition last month. Later on this year, the story will also appear in the Riverside / Palm Springs edition , and finally the Los Angeles edition. Kind of weird how they do that, but I figure because they spent so much money doing this little story, they gotta get the most mileage from it.

Usually, they give tons of details about the car, such as the 914-4 was a collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen, blah blah blah. They had no room to do that. Peter did tell me that this is the first time they’ve ever featured more than one car, which is pretty cool.

Lilly and I are thinking about displaying her car and my Hacienda Honda shop truck tribute in the friends of Steve McQueen car show. We even made some new friends at the 2025 WCR. Lilly really enjoyed meeting Loretta. We framed the feature and put it up in our living room. The girls will never forget getting up at 5 AM that Saturday morning during the summer break lol
