I have been very fortunate to own three different original 914-6’s. I sold the first one (matching numbers tangerine car) at auction about 10 years ago for what was then a record price for a 914. I sold the second one a few years later in need of restoration. I found the third one locally a couple of years ago missing its original engine and transmission, but I had a 2.4L 911E motor on the shelf that I installed and I’ve enjoyed the car sparingly since then. The motor now needs to come out so we can perform some repairs and I’m debating whether I put the 2.4 motor back in, install a fresh 3.0 that I have sitting on the shelf, or put in a 2.0 from a 68 911 in the car. The car is otherwise stock, but is painted a non-original color, and I will likely sell it after the repairs are done and I put a motor back in, so I’m thinking mostly about resale value and timing. Curious what engine you guys think would be the best option for resale and the highest value? Thanks for any input.

I've driven 914-6's with the following engines.. Factory 2.0, 2.2 S, 2.4 T, 2.4 S (w/2.2S pistons), 2.7 rs, and a 3.0 w/high comp pistons and JD cams (my brothers 914).
I would go with the 3.0 all day long if that was my choice. I built my brothers 3.0 and when I drove the car I was able to do second gear burnouts. The torque is great with the 3.0 and pulls strong to red-line. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) I have a 2.7 RS w/ solex cams engine built and ready to go into my 914-6 but eventually I'll get my 3.4 EFI engine into it. Like Mark said, a front oil cooler is needed with the 3.0 so keep that in mind. |
