I had trouble starting my restoration of a 73 914 on 914 World so I placed it on TheSamba.
I will add some background and progress as I move along. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic...0409d5dd12e3cbd |

I was asked why the paint? If you inspect the pictures, you can see the scratches she inflicted. This was true on 90% of the 914. The paint back when it had a respray was OK. Lots of orange peal etc... The body was straight at that point. The girlfriend beat the chrome trim and knocked out all the glass F R and Sides. Any surface rust and scratches were the result of her vandalism. The only panel I could not save was the rear trunk lid. So a good guy (Sam) in NC gave me one that he was replacing with fiberglass. It was Yellow and had to be changed to blue. All the panels had some some degree of scratches or dents. My painter is like all shops, he is tied up with claim work. He likes old cars but they take up any of his free time. I was looking at 4 months just for some minor body work. A spray with body work would probably be 4500 to 6000. This was not in my budget. Down the road if I want to paint it, it should be an easy deal. I have other two other projects that are painted and one that was just finished. Paint and body work money were tapped out. I am a car hoarder. So my paint is an illusion. I have covered up all her scratches, fixed any dents, cut out the rust on both front fender corners and the sail panel where I found rust under the black vinyl. The car is structurally perfect now. Suspension parts are in. Rubber parts have arrived. Dash is completed. Frunk, Trunk and Gas tank area are completed. Gas line is going to be be finished this week. Calipers F/R are rebuilt. Struts and Shocks are in. Trailing arms are next. Front bushings are on order. Engine is out. I am sorting out what to do there. I maybe sending the heads off. Progress is good on this car. I am still below 10K at this point. Add another 4(?) and I think I am in great shape with a rust free!!! Not less rust East Coast 914. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic...asc&start=0 This shows more detailed pictures of the rust issues I found in a RUST Free Car. You know the deal. |
