Is there meant to be any tape or adhesive on the inside of the rear window?

When I removed the seat backs from the car, I noticed a thin line of black caulk like adhesive. It's on the inside and I can't tell what purpose it would serve. I scraped it off with a razor blade. I need to know if I need to replace it with something before reinstalling the seats.

@Eric_Shea has a great install post, but I don't see any mention of butyl tape on the interior side of the glass.

Thanks.

I believe the factory installed a strip of black tape across the rear window so the paint color wouldn't show through. I installed a strip of electrical tape on my red '74 after the glass install to mimic this.
