Testing the windshield washer in our 1970 914-6. When I pull the wiper / washer lever I can hear a slight thud or click and then the wipers cycle. I have confirmed the noise is the electric pump as I can feel it move slightly if I put my hand on it while someone else pulls the lever. Does that mean the pump is good, or does a good working pump make a different noise?
I've been through many threads about the squirters not working, but haven't found much discussion about the electric pump itself. Thanks. |

As mentioned the original pumps have date markings on the bottom plate. This is an original pump which a also disassembled and cleaned by removing the 4 cover screws.
This is a very simple gear pump so if the motor runs your pump should work fine. Here is an image of all the original check valves and fittings with new hose. Again the new hose will be very tight on the pump nipples and no clamps required. I find that heating the hose end slightly with a head gun and a little shot of silicon spray will allow them to easily slip on, once cooled it will be tight and not leak. Lastly make sure you have the connections correct at the washer reservoir, they are easily reversed. Only one nipple has the pick-up tube running to the bottom, this has to go to the suction side of the pump, the other is the return for the pressure circuit. If the are reversed you're pumping air not water. ![]() ![]() |
