Why do replacement CV joint boots have six holes instead of the four like original.
Is it so the grease has a spot to leak out in a few years and splash all over. I am getting pissed at aftermarket stuff not made right and I find this out six months after purchasing. Why are there six holes. In my quest for originality I WANT IT RIGHT (I know most don't give a crap) but I do! My rant for today thanks for watching. |

I'm reviving this thread to see if anyone has found a source for CV Joint boots with the 4-bolt flanges, or a better solution for the 6-bolt boots?
I recently replaced both axles/CV joints with the pre-built axles from PMB, and the boots are slinging the grease out. The grease appears to be coming mostly from the empty holes in the boot flange where the roll pins are located. I do have a pair of the old 4-hole boots that I removed from the old axles that I plan to install on the inner joints so that I can keep an eye on them, but I need to find a solution for the two outer joints. I was wondering if anyone has tried drilling and tapping the 10mm roll pin holes in the CV Joint for a short 12mm bolt at the boot end of the CV Joint - keeping the roll pin at the other end? This would not only seal the empty boot flange hole, but also form a tighter seal of the boot flange against the CV Joint (and allow the use of 3 retainer plates instead of 2). But, since CV Joints are hardened steel, I did not know if this is something that would require a machinist. |
