Early ’71 914 — wipers, wipers parked on the passenger side. Normal? Options

Hey folks,
My ’71 914/4 1.7 (Italian Autogerma market) has the wipers parked on the passenger side. Car has had at least 7 owners over 55 years but is well preserved — nothing else suggests anyone ever messed with it.
Was this ever a thing on early 914s? Factory variation, dealer prep, Autogerma habit? Or almost certainly a previous owner mod?

I converted mine to park on the right 10+ years ago. Just a matter of re-indexing the motor arm 180 degrees. I wanted them out of my field of vision and I don't take it out if there is even a hint of rain. But state law says I need operational wipers to drive on the street.
Some day I'll modify the arms so the blades lay correctly...

And yes, I did get rid of the 'rubber ducky' antenna and put in a proper one...
