My 1974 1.8 with fuel injection will only start by manually opening the throttle but I can't get it idle and thus run properly. I recently had the AFM rebuilt and replaced the points, plugs, condenser and replaced the CHT sensor but the problem continues as it did before. I've looked for vacuum leaks to no avail with starter fluid. I now seek the expertise of the members of this forum for additional suggestions.

@nmkimosabe

situation re servicing /parts etc for aged aircooled VWs or porsches is identical to USA.
all the old air cooled mechanics are dead or retired. specialists machinists etc are dying out, but thats not restricted to being an air cooled thing. parts access is per USA situation.

i do a good deal of work on the car myself and what i don't do gets done by our resident mechanic. there are a bunch of us here with a co-operative workshop.
our cars get worked on by him on heavy duty matters. for instance he rebuilt all the suspension on my 914 when i recommissioned it about 5 years or so back. i had had its stored for the 16 years or so previous. the rest of the recommission work i assisted him.

for the last three months i have been head down - arse up on 4 late 60s / early 70s mercedes benzs.
working with the mechanic on various recommissioning and minor restoration servicing issues on those cars. one of which is a 1972 benz CE250 still running its D jet EFI system. its turned out to be a pretty special car. another of them is a benx 6.3 - the big V8. mechanically fuel injected. its been fun. i've been attending to all the interior wood trim in all the cars - amongst other things. have developed another useless set of skills as a result. its all fun.

the older cars are not necessarily the headache for parts at present. funnily enough its the cars that are about 20-25 years old that parts are drying up on (which are cars that do not have extensive cult followings say like the 914). i have a friend with a 97 citroen xantia we look after for her. that car is suddely proving very difficult to get bits and bobs for. but she persists. she loves it. its sort of the last of the fully hydraulic citroens and they just don't make em like that anymore.

good luck with your 1.8
sometimes it can be exasperating trying to get to the bottom of a niggle.
