My hazard switch is wonky . I'm looking at some vw stuff online that has the part# but slightly differet configuration. Anyone tried this or know an interchangeable part? This is maddening. Thanks. It's a 72.

by different configuration do you mean the central colored bit with the symbol is different.

if so - then its just a matter of either looking around enough to find the right one,
or just flipping out that central plastic bit with the symbol and putting in your old plastic bit from your wonky switch.

the euro cars had a different symbol in the switch than the USA cars.
a lot of the aftermarket repro switches have the euro symbol in them.

same goes for cig lighters. a lot of the new repro replacement switches have the later cig lighters used in the Golf with a cig and smoke swirl. but if you look around you can find the older "ronson" lighter style symbol. usually from european VW parts shops.
