My daily is a 2017 Macan GTS. For most things, I do my own maintenance. Just short of 45K miles a brake sensor went off. I took a look at the pads and there was plenty of pad left. 50K miles, I check again and now it needs the pads.
I decided to do pads and rotors and get everything delivered by PMB. Y’all remember that guy right? Well, today I started on the right side and everything went fine until I tried to remove the original rotor. That beeotch ain’t going no where! Heat. Nope. PB Blaster. Nope. Hammer,. Nope. I rented a big-ass puller from the FLAPS and I’ll regroup tomorrow. Fook!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

The brake rotor pulling tool is the best solution as it keeps all force isolated between the rotor and the hub and doesn’t transfer any force into the bearing. It is the right tool for the job.
Hammering a brake rotor is about the worst thing you can do. If overdone with the BFH (I’ve seen guys use a sledge), you can damage the wheel bearings very easily. Nothing like trading an easy job now for a much harder job down the road. Few people ever make the connection why the wheel bearings failed prematurely. I hate to say this but the mechanics don’t care. By the time the wheel bearings fail, there is usually tens of thousands of miles of plausible deniability between the brake job and the wheel bearing failure. Then they make more money later on the bearing job. Here’s a better way to avoid the shock & excessive impact loading that causes brinelling of the bearings caused by excessive hammering with the BFH. Still not perfect because it transfers force into the wheel bearing but it’s better than continual BFH beating and quicker too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWCGm8aueTs?is=ZQ0ExEvAxxJR7TwB |
