I have the rear trailing arm off for replacement and looking at the oil tank.... the paint job was obviously not up for the task. The car only has a 4000 miles since this was installed new. Everything on this car (snoopy) was done with new and or original style parts so from a visual perspective it all looks original. But I just can't see how the steel tank wouldn't be better if it was aluminum. The filler neck is also a reproduction part and has tons of rust from condensation- surprising considering how much this stuff costs!
So- I'm on the fence- pull what I have and send it out for some type of 2 part epoxy treatment and get the filler neck cad plated, do my best with a wire brush and use some quality rubberized spray (not great for heat transfer- if that matters) or sell it and go all aluminum. Also seems like a good idea to get the chrome trim back on with the tank out.... Pete |

Hi Pete. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) I know you've had this car a while. You live on an island, nothing you can do about that. But aluminum doesn't rust. MB911 is selling his oil tank stuff, and as I understand it will no longer be making them. I believe he is going to make something else.
So you may want to PM him and see what he can do for you. As for the stock stuff see if you can repair re-finish and store it away just in case you do decide to sell someday. Hope you are well. @peteinjp I just noticed his black friday thread http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=379508 |
