I need to have my altenator rebuild on my 2.7 and I've removed the fan and housing from the engine but can't seem to be able to seperate the alternator from this assembly. There is a round "nut" with two flat sides and a notch in the middle ...is this special tool time again? The alt is a Marchaval or however it's spelded (spelt?,lol...) Anyone here come across this? TIA.

The alternator is a tight fit in the fan housing (ring), but it does come out. You need to remove the 6mm (10mm wrench size) nuts around the perimeter of the alternator, then tap on each of the through bolts with a brass or copper hammer, going round and round, until the alternator slides out. Might be a good idea to leave the nuts on just to the end of the threads to prevent mushrooming the threads. The fastener you describe is unclear to me, but it has nothing to do with removing the alternator. BTW, you DO have the fan off, right?
