what do the relays under the passenger seat do and do I need them??? 2.0l carbs.

Yes! The big yellow wire is the most important one to be spliced (ignition/starter/solenoid). Without that splice it won't crank! The rest isn't critical. But a couple other circuits tie together here that should be spliced (see previous post). Maybe they are grounds? Maybe DD will pitch in with more details...
