pulling my gas tank to install a new fuel pump, filter and lines......started to wonder if anything was inside the expansion tank.....any reason I couldn't substitute a lighter, smaller tank for the same purpose???

If you just bypass the tank and still use the vapor recovery? I dunno prolly nuthin'. If you remove the tank and not use the vapor recovery system - you need to plug the hose coming out of the gas tank or it'll get a little stinky in the cabin.
