pulling my gas tank to install a new fuel pump, filter and lines......started to wonder if anything was inside the expansion tank.....any reason I couldn't substitute a lighter, smaller tank for the same purpose???

Let's see, there's mostly nitrogen, some oxygen, CO2, unburnt hydrocarbons, various other gases, water vapor, some particulates and probably a little unrecognizable goo in the bottom. Pretty close to air.
