I've got a guy ready to sell me this 914 (he's asking $1000). I don't currently know much more than it is a 1976 with a 2.0L engine. Assuming that I can turn the motor over, and there is no serious rust (I know to look at the battery tray, and to try and open the doors while sitting in it to see if the car flexes) what other questions should I ask?

Anyone know what that thing on the front side is?

Thanks!
Terry

Thanks for the replies guys!

He said $1000 obo, so I'll probably be able to talk him down alittle. Looks like it's in a storage place, probably costing him money every month. He also said that the inside is in excellent shape. The whole car does look alittle beat (I only see one windshield wiper..). I'm good with cars in general (I'm really a Jeep guy, but looking to branch out), and can do the easy bondo style body work - I don't want to get into any frame stuff though.

scotty b - Thanks for the offer! This car is actually up in Maryland, so it may be a bit of a hike for you. Do you know if there are many of these in VA in general? I haven't been looking long (a week maybe), and I've got the itch to buy something. I'd say my budget is around $1500 or so - would you think that's enough to get a driveable 914 around here?

Yet another question - in VA, will this thing need to get inspected (in my county we also need emissions tests), or can I just slap antique plates on there and drive it around reguardless of condition? I live in one of those townhouse places and the neighborhood association nazis aren't going to tolerate a car with no plates.
