I signed the petition though I doubt it will do anything.
That said, NASCAR is like watching paint dry. Sure the drivers have skills. Driving at 190 mph+ takes skills. Doing it all day long takes endurance, conditioning and determination. That is the real stuff. The problem is that for most of the season, minus a few road courses, all they do is turn left. Wanna impress me? Throw in a few chicanes and hairpins. Hell, I'd love to see them go down the corkscrew. So to me, its a matter of perception. Sure it takes skill (and brass balls) to run a car at 190 mph+, with only a few feet seperating cars, but it takes MORE skill to do that in the woods (WRC) or on a road course (F1). And let's not forget our little car, the 914. Unless its heavily modified, there are plenty of cars that blow a 914's doors off in a straight line (or an oval), but add in some twisty parts and we are having fun. Maybe since we appreciate that handling, braking and other aspects of driving can make you successful we don't generally appreciate oval racing. Anyway, I doubt it will change. NASCAR is a cash cow. F1 doesn't draw the crowds here, and its likely a good thing because then this thread would be all about Bernie, and I don't want to go there. |
