QUOTE (wbergtho @ Jan 22 2006, 08:27 PM)
ALTHOUGH I REALLY DON'T SEE WHAT MAKES NASCAR SO INTOXICATING TO SO MANY FANS, I'M GLAD THESE PEOPLE ARE GETTING A KICK OUT OF IT. MY PREVIOUS POST WAS A BIT SARDONIC (I DON'T ACTUALLY WANT TO SEE PEOPLE GETTING HURT). NASCAR FANS PROBABLY THINK F1 IS A SNOBBY EURO THING AND THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS THAT IF YOU FIND SOMETHING ENTERTAINING AND YOU ARE WILLING TO SUPPORT IT, PAY FOR IT, AND GET CRANKED UP ABOUT IT...IT IS A GOOD THING. IT MAKES YOU HAPPY. PERSONALLY...I'LL STICK TO ROAD RACING OF ANY KIND. APPARENTLY, WE AMERICANS ARE NOT, AS A WHOLE, VERY EXCITED ABOUT F1, CART, SCCA, OR OTHER FORMS OF NON-NASCAR ENTERTAIMENT...SO AS A RESULT WE SIMPLY DON'T HAVE IT.  PERHAPS THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP EXPLAIN WHY NASCAR HAS BECOME SO POPULAR? ANYONE CARE TO EXPOUND?

First, you need to learn some Netiquette When you type in ALL CAPS IT IS AS IF YOU ARE SHOUTING.

Now, you make some decent points, and I am not 100% sure of your use of "sardonic" in the previous post, although you make a reference to accidents which would make it close, but the irony part escapes me.

Anyway, the reason that Nascar does well here is that it is home grown and it is marketed by people with a commitment to make it successful. NASACAR is 100% Amricana and it plays well in the south, where there are a lot of people that like what NASCAR represents, at least on the surface.

Bernie Ecclestone could give a rats ass about the US market and what it takes to be successful here. Kids in the US have no idea who Juan Fangio, Ayrton Senna and either Schumacher are, let alone want to be them when they grow up. They are not heros here. To make them heros requires time, effort, investment and patience. There are not things that Ecclestone is known for.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that CART and IRL fcuked themselves over in their little pissing match. Domestic open wheel hasn't been the same since.
