NASCAR is a reality TV program. It is marketing at its best. That said, it is not easy to drive 190 MPH six inches from a bunch of other guys going 190 with you.
There already was a woman driver in the Craftsman Truck series who was sponsored by a Bra company. The slogan was "Burn Rubber, not Bras!" Betty loved that one!!! And the reason we dont see anything but Ford/Chevy/Chrysler is rooted in the rules. They insist on running a pushrod V-8. And that rule is the fault of Mercedes. In 1975, Mercedes outfitted one of their 2 door sedans to meet the rules for the Daytona 500 (I don't remember who the sanctioning body was at that time). It was a slightly warmed over Mercedes V-8 with CIS. In testing at Daytona, it went out and lapped within one second of the track record. So the sanctioning body said they had to run a single carb. Mercedes put on a single 4 barrel carb, and matched the track record (note that they had not done any real tuning or development of the car, just initial test runs). So the "powers that bei) said that the motors had to be a pushrod V-8. Mercedes went home, never to come back. If they had not implemented that "pushrod V-8 motors only" rule, Mercedes would have cleaned up that year. |
