WOW,
Can't resist but should! On another post you'll see that I tested my G prod 914 at Willow Springs motorsports park this weekend. It's a road course for those of you that don't live out west. What holds the track record there? A NASCAR stock car. Recently beat Michael Andretti's record in an Indy Car. Outdated technology Huh? Who are you kidding and what planet are you from? Let's see; Jack Roush, Roger Penske, Joe Gibbs, A.J. Foyt and Parnelli Jones have all recently fielded NASCAR teams. Those names sound familiar to anybody on this site? Some of the most famous names to me in NASCAR history; Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, Mark Donahue, Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser (both Sr. and Jr.), Ron Fellows, Brian Simo, Robby Gordon (I can't stand him, but that's just personal, used to race with him and know him as a person) Ron Hornaday. Any of those names familiar to you road racers? Some of the current drivers alma maters; MIT, University of Wisconsin, UCLA, USC. Not bad for a dumb bunch of hicks. The Ford GT40 and Cobra (the real one not the mustang pretenders) are essentially NASCAR technology. Anybody want to argue with their results? As I recall they beat the Porsches, Mercedes, Ferraris and Alfas. Recently several F1 racers tested NASCAR stock cars at the same time Jeff Gordon tested an F1 car. They weren't offered contracts, not fast enough. But Adrian Fernandez is drving a NASCAR BUSCH car and not doing very well along with several other current and former CART and IRL drivers at selected races By the way, Paul Newman and Newman/Haas did sponsor and technically still do sponsor several NASCAR teams and Paul and Steve McQueen have both driven stock cars at different times. NASCAR's drivers are not only every bit as talented as open wheel and road racing drivers they ARE open wheel and road racing drivers. The most recent 24 hours of Daytona was a perfect example. A very large number of NASCAR drivers participated and won. Why did SCCA change their rules regarding fuel cells and fire systems? Dale Earnhardt Jrs. crash at Daytona in a Corvette road racing car in the 24 hour race. Driven a NASCAR stock car and the Porsche. If I had the money I'd be in the stock car. The Porsche is alot cheaper to run but nowhere near as much fun. Why is NASCAR so popular? The drivers are real people, or at least were. You can walk up and touch the cars and occasionally sit in them. Even drive them for less than the cost of a set of tires for my Porsche. They race in or near your home town and they are probably from there. (I grew up with Ron Hornaday, Sr and Jr and raced against Robby Gordon and Rick Mears). Looking at where most of us are from on this site you grew up with somebody from your hometown in a NASCAR stock car as well. I was in Hilton Head for a conference last year. Was out to dinner and sat next to Felix Sabates (Owns several NASCAR teams as well as a HUGE yacht). Ended up talking to he and his family for most of the evening, just plain nice folks. Try doing that with Bernie Ecclestone or any of the F1 owners some time, not a chance in hell. F1 is just a bunch of pretty boy, poser, actor wannabe, former lorry drivers who think they have talent because they drive for teams with more money than sense. And as far as technology goes, despite every type of "management known to man; fuel, engine, traction, suspension and brake; the F1 teams still can't build an engine or car that will last for 500 miles, that's some really great technology there. (yes, that is sarcasm). Even though I run a G prod Porsche there is nothing that makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck like being passed by a BUSCH north car and a CRAFTSMAN truck who were being chased (Yes chased) by a pair of Archer brothers Vipers. Those push rod V8's haul the mail and they sound like it. So, All hail NASCAR, the new king on the block. For those of you who hate the sport, like all motor racing, they will only be on top a little while before Americans get bored and a new type of racing takes over. Please God, not rally or F1, the most boring racing ever invented the way it is run these days. Has there actually been a pass made on track in F1 in the last couple of years? But when NASCAR is replaced I bet the France family and ISCA will own a big chunk of whatever the new kid on the block may be. Just my 4 cents worth. (It was a long rant so must be more than 2).
