After the unfortunate incident this past week... now that we've patched things up. I thought maybe the X19 guys would come over and check the site out.

As I recall, both the 914 and the X1/9 were designed to meet a proposed roll-over test that the US government was thinking about making a part of federalization. That test never came to pass, but it effectively killed off the convertible. If you think back, there were only a few true convertibles in the US market in the 70s. Almost all of those were older models that were continued. So when you think of a car having to pass a roll over test, an integral roll bar makes a lot of sense. As a result, of trying to pass this test, the cars were made much more sturdy in comparison to older designs like the MGB, Spitfire, 850 Spider, Karmann Ghia, Spridget, etc... |
