I am new to your board. I currently do not own a 914 but have an opportunity to acquire one. I have been doing as much reading as I can about them. I own other classic cars and am aware of the issues about rust and maintenance. I have never driven a 914 so I would like to know what other owners enjoy most about their cars. I would be using the car for Solo II and for driving around town or weekend trips. I realize these cars don't possess gobs of power but when it comes to Solo, a good handling car is better than power monger anyway.
Thanks in advance for your advise. |

Lots of reasons...
It is a purely visceral car. You -feel-, -hear-, and -smell- everything. The car is extreemly agile. With better handling than cars costing even ten times as much. They are very simple, you don't need a computer to repair it. They have cavernous cargo capacity for such a small car. There's nothing quite as nice as top off drivin' in nice weather, the targa top makes the passenger compartment a nice open feel without all the wind from a convertible. And as Brad was quoted, they make GREAT race cars. And yes, all of the trully great race cars from Porsche have been mid-engined. I've had the great oportunity to drive a veritable host of race cars over the years. From a Honda Civic, to a radically prepared BMW M3, to a production class VW Rabbit, to a Formula Ford race car. They were all great in their own right, but I still got more grins per mile in the teener than anything else I've ever driven. Okay, the M3 was freakin' amazing! But there is no way I can afford that car. And furthermore, I can't take the roof off and enjoy a nice day in that car like I can with the teener... For most people the 914 is a love-hate relationship. We LOVE the car. But we will often call our prized possesion a piece of (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/post-2-1117899824.gif) for the times that something 30 years old finally gives up the ghost and we have to fix it... But for all our bellyachin' we still love these cars. You have to drive one to know. But beware, once you do, you're gonna want one... -Josh2 |
