I am new to your board. I currently do not own a 914 but have an opportunity to acquire one. I have been doing as much reading as I can about them. I own other classic cars and am aware of the issues about rust and maintenance. I have never driven a 914 so I would like to know what other owners enjoy most about their cars. I would be using the car for Solo II and for driving around town or weekend trips. I realize these cars don't possess gobs of power but when it comes to Solo, a good handling car is better than power monger anyway.

Thanks in advance for your advise.

QUOTE (Mueller @ Mar 6 2006, 02:32 PM)
you gotta drive one to appreciate it......there are many 914 owners that have much faster and powerful cars as well as owning a 914...(I have a 911 with a 3.6, lowered, fat tires, etc...etc....)......9 out of 10 times I'd rather be behind the wheel of my stock 1.8 914 blasting down the road or taking my favorite on-ramp or off-ramp (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/MDB2.gif)

Why is that?

driver input and car output is one.....a simple 15mph right hand turn from one street to another can be perfectly executed in the 914 and it'll be the closest feeling to being in a go-kart....

a few things to consider:

there are no simple/cheap bolt-on power increase items....
It's not a Honda......
very limited selection of aftermarkte rims...
It's not a Honda......
finding tune-up or repair items can be tough at times...
It's not a Honda......
it's a 30 year old car that is going to need some love.....
It's not a Honda......
the shifting is not the best (you can buy a better shifter, but it's not cheap).....
It's not a Honda......

you really have to drive one to understand why we love the underpowered and somewhat ugly 914 (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
