First, I'm the owner of a 73 914 with a 1.7 liter engine that has bent/broken intake valves. I'm not a mechanic, but the cost to repair this part seems to be as much, if not more, than finding a running engine and putting it into the car.
With that said: Can I 'drop' any 914 engine into the car??? 1.8 -2.0?? Is the mechanic correct, will it cost me nearly the same amount to simply find (FAR FROM SIMPLE) a running engine and have it put in the car??? Can I 'drop' any of the larger engines into the car without any problems??? ___ next level questions_____ Anyone with any ideas of the causes for a 'big bore' engine to RUN HOT . there is no thermostat connected to the engine and after about an hour of running it starts heading into the red zone. -for direct contact: Rfranklin@price-entities.com -during the day (pacific time), Riccif@cts.com -at night. I would really really appreciate anyones help/response. I'm always greatful to this board and point eveyone I know in its direction. My current 914 was purchase after many hours of discussion on this board and it is a gem. The ENGINE was damaged due to mandatory driving on the face of the MOON in order to get to work for nearly 3 months (streets on my way to work -were pothole infested- caused serious damage to exhaust/engine -though again, according to what I have learned I simply have an 'intake valve -bent/broken' issue). |

Heyyy 914 gang, should there ever be a competition for useful boards and the power of the internet -THIS PLACE SHOULD WIN HANDS DOWN.
Lets just say, I've had total strangers give me straight talk as if helping me out of a suicide window and I appreciate it all, GREATLY. THEN, to make things even better, I did manage to meet a member, MIKE, who is just up the highway and is now a GODFATHER to my little car. It sounds as if he has the heart I need, an exact replacement. Not a super fast, macho bored out engine that runs hot from North Carolina, but instead, a 1.7 that RUNS and that I can actually pick up myself and drive home rubbing the flat four. MIKE can tell you, if he wants, about the deal we made but I'm amicable to the arrangements and he did tell me he would kill me if I was to say anything -LOL. THANKS MIKE. I still am wishing for carbs -only cuz they look cool to me, but I also know that a good fuel injection system isnt a bad thing at all. The engine I was 'sweating' is on EBAY CARS -just look up BIG BORE and you will find it. Perhaps one of you guys know someone who is ready for that type of booger. ME, at this point, I'm just looking to get the little horse back up and running, I'll quell my Need For Speed on the PS2 for a while -if I can ever get that FIXED!!!!!! -I'm blaming all of this on GD Terrorist!!!! Best BBS on the planet - I've found the precious!!! -FRODO BEWARE. Now before I count my chickens, I'm planning on working with MIKE - I hope he emails me directions tomorrow morning. TILL THEN, --this is a photo of the heartlesss REDDdd who should be undergoing surgery next week and back on the road. Again, I'm not a fan of the mullet tail -it came with the ride, but I do like the sunroof targa top -its an intersting touch. I feel Like I owe you all tuition. After I am finished with the 1.7 I am removing, if you guys have any suggestions for where I should stick it, let me know -otherwise, its going to Valhalla Attached image(s) ![]() |
