When I had pulled my trans and engine in the assdragger six months ago for the second gear
repair, the outboard boot(s) looked fine...the inboard CVs had plenty of
grease. I should have pulled the splines off and looked inside. It was
dry...very dry but there no evidence of thrown grease anywhere....odd that.

I slapped in a known good set of CVs and axles....no more clunk....

I guess I'll service this one....see if the balls and cage are savable and
then pull the other side....since I have an LSD I would assume the other may
be in the same condition or close to it.

So the moral of the story....do the inspections and you won't have to do it later......since the 914 CVs are NLA....you might want to save as many as you can.

BTW....My 911 only has 88K original miles....but 35% more HP......imagine what a 914 CV and a V8 would look like.

Well I took a diff. path to rebuilding my CV's.
In the resto work of the LE the half shaft looked pretty bad
rusty and peeling the OE paint/pwdr coat. So I tore them
down only to find while the cages & body were in decent shape
no pitting or scars buts the balls were TRASHED.
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Tore some others I had apart to see if I could find some good ball bearings and those are trashed too?
So now the shafts are blasted and newly powdercoated Im just gonna replace the ball bearings and renew. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
