Kapt.: 1) I think its just going to be transparent amber paint, maybe with a clearcoat depending on how well it holds up.
2) That sign is no joke, its a real metal sign and says "WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE DEATH ON CONTACT WITH ANTENNA." Bondo found it at a junkyard that sells a lot of commercial and military surplus stuff. Geoff: Not sure how far the Luxeon will throw light. The lens that I have on it produces an oval pattern similar to a headlight. 5 watts of white LED light is really quite a bit, especially with the high color temperature. I doubt it would do much good as a driving light or fog light, but its defintiely a LOT more visible than a euro incandescent bulb. An array of 10 or so could be put in each turn signal bucket, for headlamp use, but at $23 each, that would be expensive. Also, at the full 5 watts output power they are only rated for ~500 hours of life before they start dropping in light output. There are other brands I'm looking at which have longer lifetimes. I'm waiting for a sample from Cree of their latest super high output white LED. |
