Looking into a well-kept 76 2.0 liter with 130K.
Strong looker with "no rust" but has carbs and I told myself I really want injection. The injection parts are in a sealed cardboard box, car has had carbs (almost typed "crabs") for 15 years or more. Question is, why did I tell myself I want injection? I'm not a real CW but one of the vendors' site about buying the 914 has the "beware the carbs" caveat in the article. More HP out of the engine with carbs? More reliable? Thanks for advice. biz |

Biz,
Welcome to the madness! Many have had maintenance struggles with the stock FI. I've had Carbs & FI. My latest teener started with stock FI, but was so difficult to get it running properly (mostly due to limited real-time diagnostics without special tools) - that I upgraded the stock system with a more modern FI control unit. This retained most of the stock FI components & replaced the more problamatic ones. It also allowed for more variations in cam choices when rebuilding the engine - as the stock system is very limited. The only way to convince yourself either way is to drive the car with the carbs for a while - see what you think. If the FI parts are included you can always revert later - perhaps when the engine ready for its next rebuild. This will give you the oportunity to build with certain results in mind. So go anti-up and ENJOY! |
