Is the vacuum hose junction for the 12mm hose anything special (ie, check valve, etc.) or just an open "y" for connecting the hose...I need one...

are you talking about this one? Lower right corner?
It is called the anti flashback valve.....I think it is more than a simple Y connection? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Attached image(s)
