After searching, I found that some used 3/8 butyl tape and others use 1/4"

What is the right one? I would assume that if it's too small, there will be gaps and if too big, the glass might move and stick out too far

I just used 1/4. It seals, but there was room, especially on the sides. If I did it again, I buy 5/16 or 3/8. If you pull on it, it narrows down where needed.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I went with 1/4" the last time I did it and it came loose again all too soon (okay, a year).

The guy at the glass shop warned me of that. He said when it gets hot the glass can come loose. He says it's marginal using butyl on the rear and illegal to use on a front glass these days. I didn't use the butyl

He gave me a product called Sika Tack Cool along with primers for the paint and the glass. The stuff is in a caulk tube and VERY stiff and almost the consistancy of the butyl. My hands hurt trying to get it out of the tube but it worked great. I may have the opposite problem....I may never get the glass out again!

Thanks for the responses
