My wife brought this to my attention. I don't know how I could have missed it.

Man, this is incredible.
Here's my opinion and my reasons. I believe Shumi was wrong and I think he was reckless. Undoubtedly, his skills mitigate this but, they don't relive him of responsibility. First, he had no idea of the mechanical condition of the car. Granted his skill could allow him to drive out of some situations but, a mechanical failure would put his family at risk and possibly other drivers. Stuff happens, and it is more likely to happen at speed. Second, he had no way to know how other drivers would react. On the track you can assume people will react in somewhat predictable ways. Even in spirited drives with other performance cars on the road you can assume a some skill. The cabbie said he passed in unusual places. Consider passing some old lady on the outside of a corner. I suspect she might gasp look to the outside and flinch that way. Maybe Shumi is gone by then but, what about the old lady's car handling skills in that situation. Everyone will make up their own mind on this and what I think people base their decision is how much risk they percieve and how much risk they believe is acceptable. I think it was wrong because I think the risk was unnacceptable (my opinion) and wouldn't have done this . Decreasing risk is about reducing the what ifs. Look at all of the safety improvements to tracks and race cars. Look at credentialling of drivers. None of that was present here. Everyone will avoid the what will happen situations unless they are crazy, mad or stupid. This situation is full of what ifs and to me that makes me think it increased the risk of everyone involved directly including him, his family and the cabbie and those indirectly involved like other drivers and onlookers. I would have been pissed if I was on the road and I saw the cab. There is just no way I can see that it can be argued that this behavior didn't increase the risk of injury to someone. I think you can argue that the likelihood that a what if happens is reduced because of Shumi's skills but they still exist. Now before I put myself on a pedestal, I have done foolish things in cars that have put others at risk and I will probably do more so, I'm no better than anyone else including Shumi. In this situation we also have the advantage of hindsight. I'll be critical but, i sure won't cast any stones. The good news is reading stuff like this might make some of us think a little bit more the next time. Dave |
