Question on the proper orientation of the CV joint ball cage? All four of the CV joints on a 1972 914 have the ball cage installed with the larger diameter facing away from the drive-shaft and towards the flange. This is the as found condition when removed for repacking. Our experience and as referenced in VW factory manuals for T1, T-2, and T-3 CV joints clearly specify the larger diameter portion (mouth) of the ball cage should face towards the drive-shaft. The 914 factory manual does not specify the direction.

The diameter of the smaller opening is 1.840", the larger 1.875".

What gives? What is the proper orientation? Does it matter on these cars? We do no know if the CV joints on the car have ever been serviced but all four were found the same. We checked past threads and did not find the answer.

Also it seem that the two joints removed from the right side of the car have more "slop" than the two on the left side which are much tighter. Is this expected? As some threads suggest we will switch sides when reinstalling.

The same topic was also posted on the Pelican Forum with a photo.

Thanks,
