Some time earlier this year I saw a post w/pictures(not sure where),of a power
window conversion an owner had done using a slightly modified 911(?) P.W. mechanism. What was so cool (in My opinion) is it alleviated the 914's splined crank shaft (aftermarket kits I've found don't). This allows the door lock/lever assemblies (I still fumble for mine, and usually end up leaning across my passenger to let them out), to be relocated to the more convenient and accessible location where the window cranks used to be.

If anyone is familiar with the post, the car, or the owner, please let me know as
I'm in the final stages of yet another restoration and upgrade to the car and would
like to find out if it's doable at this time, before I reupholster the custom door panels.

Thanks, Scott

Nice kits, does anyone know if the flat window kit will work with our cars? The only thing I have seen for a while is the motor of my car so can't remember if our windows are considered 'flat' or not.

I have installed the : http://www.gcustoms.com/product_list/categ...wer_Window_Kits See PPPPW4

Just about perfect for a 914. Summit racing sells them too, I think they are called universal kits.

Here is the original thread started by Dr. Evil. There is a nice diagram of the wiring in the thread plus assorted troubleshooting details.
http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=48405

I stated with the kit Dr Evil shows, but could'nt use it because of door mounted speakers. The universal kit allows the motor to be mounted toward the rear of the door-on the lip of the open space. Then a spedometer-like cable runs up to the crank adapter.

Here's a pic of my switch mounting.

Thanks Jim,

Nice looking interior in your car, and clean install of the switches.
No problem finding universal kits, as there are many available. but they all use the existing crank shaft(like yours) to opperate. What I' want to do is to convert to power windows AND relocate the door lock and lever assembly (my custom door panel armrests make them difficult to locate) and this requires the removal of the crank shafts. To see what I mean see the cardomain link Dr. Roger included in his post.

That link works here too... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I doubt a flat window kit would work in our cars without a lot of work. The kits from Hoffman Group are quite tall and would definitely need to be shortened. That's what I had to do on the Squareback project I've got.

Here's a photo from the CarDomain link, of what I'm trying to accomplish if I can find an affordable pair of oem 911 P.W.assemblies. The owner says the 911 left door assembly is installed in the 914 right door and the 911 right into the 914 left. If I can contact Him for details, I'll make them available to anyone intrested.

This will be the next project once the dang car is back together.

Jim, how long did it take you set up the kit and get everthing wired; any pointers?

I went ahead and purchased the Left and Right 911 power windows from RennSpeed (the Dr. Evil link to EBay) and I should have them at the end of the week. I will then come back and work to document the whole process with you all.

Cheers,
Larouex

Oh, I'd say only those who owned one, or driven, or ridden or seen one. Buy to the best of My knowledge. I'm the only one to have actually figure out how to do it, and have one in my car.
