This guy decided to take up residence on our front porch last night. Scared the hell out of Betty when she came home.

I know nothing about snakes... does anyone here know what kind of snake this is? Should we call animal control to get him removed, or is he harmless?

If he is dangerous, I don't want the local cats or dogs to get bit.

It is in the 60s here, so he is not moving too well. But I am still worried.

It looks like a gopher snake!

If it has rattles on the tale it is obviously a rattle snake. The diamonds along the back are suspect for the Diamond Back Rattler!

I have not been able to see the tail. Too dark last night, and he has it curled under him today.

Is a gopher snake dangerous?

kinda hard to tell from the pick, but his nose and head look kinda rounded. Rattler would have more of a sharp nose.

It is hard to tell from that pic. Can you reach down there and remove the leaves so I can see all of him? While you're at it get a hold of his tail and pull it out so we can see if it has rattles. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

He got caught out trying to get a meal and now the norther has come in so he will go home. Rattlers have a much larger head.

I agree with the head. Usually a rattler will let you know if your too close. Close enough for that pic and he would be rattlin. I have stepped right over the top of one at work. They will almost always get your attention. The larger ones like that (if it were a RS) usually won't inject venom on something as big as a human. The little ones will though (not smart enough to control there venom yet). And we can't kill them at work. Guess the dam eco fuchs figure they are worth more than the employees!

I have never heard of a rattler not injecting venom unless he has just depleated it on another strike. I hope no one tests your theory about not injecting humans.

It's essentially true... a mature rattler will tend to not expend as much venom in a defensive bite... it knows it can't eat you, so it just wants you to go away. Still not worth the risk, though.... it is likely that there will be some amount of venom.

That snake is definitely non-venomous, and almost certainly a bullsnake/gopher snake. Bullsnakes can be aggressive, and can bite, and the bite can get infected. If there are kids or pets around, I'd want it removed.
