Howdy, folks! Thanks in advance for your help with this. I'm new here and to 914s. I've found this car http://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto/1687469145.html and have a question about how bad a situation this might really be. I exchanged a couple of emails with the owner (who is out of town) and asked about the nature of the damage to the rear suspension. It appears that the damage occurred by hitting a curb. Sounds a little scary, but, other than the old mount being repaired or a new one being fitted, this seems pretty straight forward. Any words of advice?

Thanks, again!

Parroting here but I will be corrected if wrong.
Check very closely that the chassis is straight. Swing arm can be replaced (best case), mount can be repaired (not horrible), but chassis would be tougher and expensive to straighten.

If the chassis is straight, be sure to check for rust. Then check for rust, then check for rust again. After all that, check for rust.

I don't buy it. If he had hit a curb, the wheel would be pointing inward at the bottom.

It appears the pass. side suspension console has rusted through. That is a common problem related to rust in the "hell hole" (Area under the battery tray).

My guess is that car has serious rust ...

I saw that one too. Depends on how good you are with a welder. Usually the trailing arm mounting ear rusted from the inside out and finally gave way. If the mounting ear is rusted and broken it usually means you will find plenty of rust in other locations.

Wow!! You guys are on this like stink on poo!

Yeah... indeed the angle of that wheel is going the wrong way for a curb hit, but, who knows what might have been done as it was towed. I'll have a look at it and will check it thoroughly for rust and will see where it goes.

Thanks, again, for the welcome and for the info.

Cheers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

That seems like a lot of $$$$ for a damaged car like that. Maybe worth 1K here if everything else was good.

Looks like my first teener before I learned about the classic rust problem that occurs on the passenger side suspension console. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Gotta agree with the folks here. Sometimes the learning curve can be steep and expensive. If you don't mind taking a drive, I'm available for you to stop by and I can show you what to look for on the two cars I have. Nothing like some real hands on experience for the price of a nice drive. PM me if interested.

The price does seem a little high for a repair car , know what size engine init ?/The exhaust pipe seems to be a bit large coming out the back dr. side , look at it for DAPO installed fixes , if it's that easy to fix , the owner would have already done it , look carefully at the suspension rear and front , ask about brake condition , what the hell was it that caused the driver to hit a curb , car or loose nut behind the steering wheel ??? Was it driven home after the accident or towed ?? Carbed or fuel injection . If the owner will allow , have him pull the rocker pqanels on the sides to inspect the longs and suspension mounts , also the jack mounts , if you can stick a rod or similar device into the jack points further than maybe 4 or 5 inches , then the long behind the jack post is rusted out =$$$$$, this is easy to do if he/she doesn't want to pull the rocker panels. Good Luck ....

That can't be good - there's a '74 2.0 on CS for $3000 (no connection, but I'd take a look myself if I had the cash laying around). It's on Denver Craigslist - there are a few others around that price as well.

If I saw this 914 w/o the explanation, I would think that the suspension console is rusted. I would stay away from this car.

If I were looking for a 914, I would look only at 2L cars. 1.7L cars are ok but the extra grunt of the 2L almost transforms the car into a real fun ride.

It could easily have hit a curb, and caused the rusty suspension console/ear to bust out. And then driving the car has caused the assembly to move outwards and display exaggerated camber. I doubt that it's just the control arm that's bent, but it is possible. Go look at it and see what's really wrong with it. Negotiate a deal. Just because he's asking $2500, doesn't mean he'll get that. But at $1000, it could be a bargain.

Where are you located? In the Springs? Are you the guy that joined Colorado-914 yesterday?

Thanks very much, Doug. I really appreiate the offer and will let you know when I'm up your way.

I'm up in Woodland Park. Hmm... Unless my joining Colorado-914 was done as a part of joining 914World, I don't think so. But, if it is, YES! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Thanks, again, for all of the sage advice. The owner of this one is out of town until mid-May, so, I'll follow up then. As it is, I don't think I'll go for it because it seems like some pretty substantial pitfalls for the price. There are, indeed, several around the Springs and Denver areas for not a lot of money, so, it would appear that the selection is pretty good.

Best regards...

I think for $2500 you should turn and run. Also, I find it a bit odd that he post the car for sale and then goes out of town. If he hit a curb he must have slid into it.
