I am working on building a 914 GT conversion. I am trying to duplicate the front GT oil cooler sheet metal ducting. I am considering buying a low cost fiberglass replica to use to make a steel version of it. Does anyone a better idea of how to approach this?

That's probably the best way to go, the fg parts aren't too expensive.

-I'm going through the same dilemma. I thought about fiberglass but I'm not a big fan of its lack of structural strength. Not that I'm planning on lugging bowling balls in the front trunk - I just prefer steel.
My plan is to install my RX-7 cooler then mock up the duct work in cardboard. I have a friend who fabricates sheet metal so we will simply layout the cardboard and bend it up on a brake, then paint or powdercoat it. Plus, the fiberglass repros are only about 21 inches wide and my cooler is 24. |

Unless you are putting an original Behr Cooler in, I would put a F/G shroud in. It's a big price difference to go up to metal and even then you would have a reproduction

The down side it only fits factory size coolers. I had heard stories that it's not big enough for a 3.6. I have had zero issues with my 3.2 and the previous 2.7 motor with my setup. I am also running the Setrab cooler from PMS. |

Thanks for the ideas. I have done everything else in steel and I would rather stick with steel for this part of the conversion. I don’t really want to spend almost a $1000 on it either. I will see if I can make templates of the pieces. I will let everyone know how they come out once I figure it out.

That's why I bought the Setrab from PMS. Have you seen the metal shroud that Paul built for his 3.6 914? It's the project 914 in Excellence. It's probably similar to what you will need to do to support a larger cooler. |

Not a total hi-jack question ...... but who makes the best GT style front f/g valance? I bought mine from American International Racing (AIR). I would do a search. Some require less fitment than others. Thanks! Not a total hi-jack question ...... but who makes the best GT style front f/g valance? Getty Design, then A.I.R., Then GTRacing After I get the fiberglass valance, I will do the upper steel bumper cutout to match, with walled in metal ...... and if someone else could use a GT bumper 'metal' wall mod ....... I might be able to help. Thanks again for the helpful responses!!! EDIT: I just saw the getty design and it looks 'proper'!!! It is more expensive but the proprtions look very good!! It says FRP which I assume is 'fiber reinforced plastic' ...... ? |

Also to the thread starter ........... it looks like you have good skills and may already know this method ........... but mocking stuff up in cardboard is an easy way to get fairly decent patterns, to then transfer onto steel. It is easy to cut, get small details and easy to 'start over' ..... if you make a mistake.
