In the process of cleaning and repacking the cv joints. Everything went together well but when it comes to replacing the (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) retaining clip on the axle, I can't get the joint far enough on the axle to reinstall the thick retaining ring. So, do I replace with a conventional clip (with plier holes/thiner) or leave the joint to "float" without clips??

I suggest using the proper clips. My PO's mechanic used the regular c-clip and i wonder if its how i ended up with this: there was more carnage and a broken c-clip. It looked like it broke and found its way into the CV.

The way I've done it is to hammer the clip against the joint itself, pushing the assembly back until the clip engages the slot. Just use an appropriately sized socket.

The clip was a little wide after removal so I carefully tapped the sides to bring it back together and placed it on the axle. I then used a 1" socket over the axle end and tapped it together. The clip went right into place. Thanks for the hint. I spent an hour last night trying to get the clip on. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)
