the darkside of engine swaps is calling my name again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

so I've been wondering what my rebuilt (or soon to be since I have no idea where Brad and or Jake are with it) 2.0 shortblock will be worth to help offset the new motor and parts:

block=GA case w/ARP head and thru-case studs
entire 2.0 rotating assembly balanced (fan > flywheel and I think the pressure plate and clutch???)
flat-top euro pistons and cylinders with about 200 miles on 'em
(of course these are the import units Jake hates (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) )

.002" oversized Ceramic lifters (case already reamed/honed for these)
Cam is supposed to be one of Jakes secret grinds for near stock 2.0 motors.

am I going to get hosed trying to sell a 2.0 without the heads???

the reason for only a shortblock is that the 2.0 heads are on my current 1.8 motor (which I hope to be driving this weekend)

if the motor checks out and passes my inspection, I'll be bringing home a 12valve VR6 from up in Folsom......bone stock, ~175hp/175ftlbs of torque from 2.8 liters...head gasket and timing chain has already been replaced..

one of the restrictions of the VR6 in the FWD cars is the exhaust, with the motor turned 90° in the 914, I can put a much, much better exhaust on it.

luckly for me, the wife is gone all weekend, I'll need the time alone to figure out how to "hide" the motor in the garage (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

SO how does that 90 degree turn work with those FWD cars? I never did quite understand how the heck it works.....

Someone enlighten me.

Just put a low price on the 2.0... Tell her this engine will be quieter.. That should help.. LOL (ahh the wonders of a header backed by a one chamber flowmaster...)

andrew...same basic principle as putting a 911 engine in a 914, you rotate the motor 180°

besides oiling issues (oil pan pickup location) the motor could care less how it's mounted in the car.....

Well ya, I know that.. But how do those FWD cars work that trani? the crank is going the same direction as the tires..... where the heck does the trani pick up the crank to deliver the tq through the axles??

At the flywheel, same as in our cars. It's the diff that changes the direction of the spin on ours. On the transverse FWD cars, it keeps the spin parallel to the original.

Ah, Grasshopper…

Imagine an axle shaft running between the front wheels.
Then put a gear on that shaft.
Now put an engine with a drive shaft running parallel to the axle shaft.
Now put a gear on the drive shaft.
Now engage the gears and start the motor.
Wala!

Now add a clutch, couple more gears, encase the gears, fill the case with some oil, make the drive shaft flexible and you have the modern front wheel drive. Actually more like the one from around1921.

Im interested...

I'd want to put a stroker (78mm) crank, and one of Jake's more agressive cams, and 96's. Are the cylinders OEM ?

If its still in pieces, it can happen ... right ?

Yes I realized thats how it has to be... BUT.. That produces one axle to be longer than the other.. Im sure thats a flaw..

You could try to find some heads or wait till your 1.8 comes back out, at least it would be a complete long block.

If it is still in parts this could work out better for you Mike. Sell the case, lifters and studs to Dave, then sell the balanced crank, fly, rods, etc. on the site or ebay.

You'll still lose, but maybe not quite as bad.

i forgot I have a set of 1.8 heads that are in excellent condition besides the broken exhaust studs (rebuilt ~10k miles or so).........I could always take the fresh 2.0 heads off of my 1.8 that is currently in the car....who know???

I'll figure something out, hahahahaha
