My thermostat cable needs replaced. It's all frayed and messed up at the end where it connects top side. Right now, it's not connected and my flaps are in default wide open status.

So, looking at Pelican (part# 021-119-751-OEM), I see these for $41.75. Any alternatives here for this part? Something from a bike shop perhaps?

And how hard to replace this with the engine in the car?

Dude... for real? Why not consolidate your questions to one post, rather than flooding us with three of them at once.

You can have a local bike shop make you a cable for the thermostat for $5 or less.

The clutch cable from Pelican works well. All clutch cables wear out over time. Replace it.

Thanks for the reply. I broke my questions up because I find it easier to locate the topic later. And sometimes, all of these extra questions get lost in the shuffle. My bad.

Also, by breaking it up into seperate questions, people can see what you're asking. You probably get more answers that way, which can be a good thing.

Yeah, go to the bike shop or maybe even Walmart. I just bought a standard length of cable. I wondered if it would cut cleanly with out fraying with regualr wire cutters...no problem. And I'd sugggest cutting it a couple of inches long! I replaced my good/functional cable just because it was short and hard to connect to the cooling flaps rod. Its a LOT easier to connect with an inch or two to hold on to with vise grips while you tighten the holding screw with the flaps closed against the springs.

What's the length of the cable? 2 feet? 2.5 feet?

I made mine using some a few feet of cable and some ferriles from the hardware store. Installed it and adjusted it, THEN cut it to length once it is installed properly. You can even crimp a ferrule tight up against the flap pinch point so that it will hold if the screw loosens a bit.

See link below.

You just never know the best way. Once I had 3 questions and made 3 posts. Like you said, they get lost in the details. Well, I made 3 posts. But I got all 3 questions answered and not by the person that wanted me to combine all my questions. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) So I say the best way is the way you want to do it.

4$ cable at german supply.com.... the PP part is an OEM Audi part, so it will cost you more cheese.

When you say thermostat cable, I assume you are taking about the heater pull cable. I purchased one from Pelican last year. Yes it is pricey! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

When I got it, it was bent wrong. I had to restraighten the cable and rebend. Several members have had that this problem. If memory serves me correct, the passenger side cable is suppose to be two inches longer than the driver's side.

I also got the rubber grommets too because mine were fried.

Something must have changed recently with the supplier or factory on pricing? This was a $10 part from pelican less than a year ago?

Confused

awesomePOWDERCOAT.com

They will sell you a T-stat for our temp range and a cable and a long brass nut.

I would say that you can replace this with the engine in the car. You just have to thread it thru the nut that screws to the T-stat then fish the other end up to the flap control bar.

Trust me, I agree wholeheartedly EC. But one person posting 3 separate threads in the span of ten minutes, all of them fairly similar in nature is unnecessary and makes things complicated for other people who have questions and would like theirs answered as well. Imagine if everyone posted all of their questions in separate threads.

Not to mention, all three questions have been answered before and a quick search would have netted the same answers. I also always operated under the assumption that we should consolidate our question threads much like the classifieds rules states.

But that might just be me. Either way, glad to see he got answers and help - for this is why we're all here.

Certainly off-topic, but I wish to respectfully disagree on this assertion. The three topics were "clutch cable", "thermostat cable" and "sound proofing pad in engine bay". All related because there are on a 914, I suppose. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'll admit I probably could have done some searching and reading, but I also like the interactive nature of the board. I'll even admit to being a bit lazy. I put them all up on the board right away because it was the beginning of my work day, and I wanted to get these items from my weekend warrior mechanic sessions off of my to do list.

Anyway, happy motoring and cheers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Yup, to each their own. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

It's possible I was just grumpy coming into work today. Which is really what I should be doing instead of reading 914World. But then I get more grumpy... it's a vicious circle.

I went down to the local REI bike shop and bought a cable that worked for $3. Slightly thicker gauge but still threaded through the nut.
