Pretty sure the 911 turbo has nothing to do with it, but it was a bad ass drive...

Anyway,

Took the 914 out for an end of the week drive and when I shifted into 4th it went into 2nd, which sounded cool when the engine revved and the tires barked but on the second try (at a lower speed) still 2nd and not 4th. I need 4th. I turned around and headed back to the house and when I was looking for 1st I am pretty sure I found 3rd. I also need 1st. I'm thinking that something in the linkage broke and hopefully this is a problem outside of the transmission. I'm going to dig around tomorrow or maybe later tonight but I just wanted to see if anyone had any educated guess on what the problem might be.

If it turns out that my 914 will not let me drive other cars with out pitching a fit, then we may have a problem...

Look for loose or missing cone screws where the linkage attaches at the trans and at the firewall. Also, check conditions of all your bushings!

Yup, start checking the linkage. Especially everything behind the firewall.

Bushings and screws.

You probably already knew this, but a good tech article with pics. From Pelican.

Also for 72 and earlier folks they have tail shift info. And on this site there are good mods for non-standard bushings. If you are doing bushings check the metal bearing one somebody has done for the firewall. Tons of info on shifters on both sites. Not much on jealous 914 behavior though! You need to talk to Naro.

I actually hadn't gotten around to that yet. Thanks for the link. Pelican tech articles have been very helpful in the past. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I think this might be part of the problem. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Anyone got suggestions on a vendor for all the wearable parts in the shift linkage. Might as well go through the whole thing and replace everything with the best stuff. I don't have a blank check but I imagine this is one area where I can go all out.

I used Pelican since they got a bushings kit with a bunch of them in one multi-package. Their tech article covers it quite well. There are some nice tips on how to install some of them. Hot water softens them up for easier install. See the previous link.

And more on the topic on this site:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...=242005&hl=

And a few threads below me is "My latest product idea" on adjusting your linkage, which, when done with the Beta testing us going to be a great addition to the quest for decent 914 shifting.

Search both here and PP, and you will have all the info you would ever need.
