Anyone have a link to a detailed carpet installation how-to? I bought the carpet kit, floor vinyl, and sill trim from 914Rubber, but my '74 came with nothing on the floors, just bare metal with some kind of thin adhesive-backed sound deadener. I've got these pieces all laid out on my garage floor and other than the obvious overlay carpet pieces I'm clueless as to where all this goes and how it is attached (I'm guessing 3M spray adhesive?)

Experiences appreciated.

The carpet is fairly straight forward. The problem areas are around the speakers and the front firewall.

The leather pieces are meant to surround the gaps between the seats and the carpet. Anywhere you look down, ie handbrake, front of seats, between seats, is where the leather goes. Use 3M adhesive. Take your time.

The long unbound pieces go on the inside rockers, they are pre cut for the seatbelt holes so that will help with left and right. The kidney shaped one with the slot cut goes at the drivers side wheel well, the slot is where the speaker mount is. The almost rectangle with the C cut out is where the steering linkage passes through. The 12" dog bone shape is one the open area on the bulkhead next to it.
The center console section has a shifter hole, and the front drivers and passenger's mats , well you can figure that one.
The rears are almost the same with the parking brake cut out.
The vinyl is a little harder to explain. I do 6 piece vinyl kit, so the thin strips go between the back pad and the inner door seals.
I did post awhile back for the other 4 pcs, I know search sucks, but you might be able to find it

Amen... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

So take a peek at these photos, see if these are correct, including orientation:

http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/GregAmy9...rt=3&page=1

Questions:

- How do the main floor carpets stay in place? I ordered these with grommets but I now see there's nothing to grommet them to...I may have to go with adhesive Velcro.
- On the rocker bits, I'm assuming it's better to glue them flush at the pinch weld at the top and trim any excess/interference at the bottom?
- I presume the driver's foot board - which was not installed on the car when I got it - goes OVER all carpeting and the carpeting goes over the passenger foot board?
- I may strategically use double-sided adhesive Velcro on some of these, in order to be able to remove them for access to wiring and such.
- I presume the vinyl gets glued UNDER all carpeting?
- Still looking for that vinyl how-to; if anyone beats me to it, please post a link.

Mark, I'm going to email you separately; given we switched from black/grey plaid seats to red, I may wish to switch to the black carpet (all marginal costs at my own expense, of course). Obviously, I won't modify/glue any of these parts if that happens.

Never mind on the vinyl floor instructions; the photos on the web page are self-explanatory:

I didn't glue anything Down for ease if cleaning. On the longs and center tunnel double stick tape. All working great after almost 2 years.

I agree. I used standard carpet tape for the longs and tunnel. The main pieces I simply laid down with no glue.

Interesting. Any pictures of installation, or after it was done?

The carpet tape also works well for sticking down the floor vinyl.

Looks good. Did you use two sided tape to install the carpet around the emergency brake lever? And where i curves in the footwells? It seems like those would be hard places to get it to stick. Unless that is amazing tape.

I considered gluing it in areas like that. But, using tape where the carpet comes down to the corner of the inner long and the floor. Then the carpet could be lifted up and those areas cleaned and inspected periodically, to prevent moister and rust there.

I did mine recently, and it wasn't hard to do. I started with the two front sections. Then, you work your way back. If you were in SoCal, I would come over and do it for you, because it's kind of fun to do. I used 3M #90 spray glue. If you need to pull the tunnel later at some point, you can still do it. I wouldn't use carpet tape, but that's me. I did a thread on it, I'll see if I can find it. I also did Perlon on the firewall, and the cabin seems a lot more 'roomy.' I like to hear the engine, and I couldn't give a fuck about music.

Swapping out carpet is no problem. Let me know if you want the carpet without grommets if your is missing them.
The Velcro works well for these applications. That's what I use.
On the drivers pedal board. The carpet is on top, but you may have already figured this out.
Just let me know

All done, thanks for the help! It was a tad fussy, but nothing difficult.

Mark, I might take you up on that floor mat swap, my car does not have posts for the circular grommets. Did those posts come stock on any car, or are they installable?

They were stock. part of the floor pan. I haven't looked really close, but I assume they were welded on. Work well to hold the mats if you have them

I just did mine too, used Mark's German Loop stuff. A little more expensive than the Perlon, but the loop should hold up better over time. Like Larmo, I used 3M #90 adhesive to do the carpet on the longs and the kidney shaped piece that fits over the drivers side wheel well area. With the grommets that are now part of the package the loop looks incredible. I didn't used anything on the center tunnel, but may pull that and use carpet tape, or maybe I'll just use adhesive on that too, haven't decided. Either way you decide to go, new carpet in these cars makes a HUGE difference.

Of course I also have Mikey's door panels and the armrest pocket (drivers side) and passenger side piece. I'll be springing for those seat covers here pretty soon too. As well as a new back pad.

I'll snap some photos tonight and post them here.
