> What's involved with adding foglights?, How difficult to add to '73 that came without them?

My '73 2.0 did not have foglights installed when built. How big of a job is it to add them? What's needed? I saw a set of aftermarket lights on ebay that comes with the switch, relay, lights, etc. I have read that the wiring is already there, is that true? I like the look of them and would like to make that part of my spring update plan.

Thanks for any advice. Dave

As a '73 you should already have the wiring for the fog lights in your car. You might find them tucked away in the front trunk or behind the bumper.

Pelican Parts has scans of the color wiring diagrams for your 73:

IMHO it would be more straightforward plug-n-play to just get the OE switch & fog lights from a seller on here &/or evil-bay, etc., + the grills used, new is still available, or Mikey914's/914Rubber repro ones to finish it off!

Jeff Bowlsby's website also has some wiring diagrams for free IIRC, either here:

http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/TechNotebook.htm

... or here:

http://bowlsby.net/914/WiringHarnesses/

PS - Really cool on having the last 930 #1200!

Good Luck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Pilot PL-193C lights fit the stock grills perfectly.
You need to source the lights, grills, a fog light switch, 911 relay and make brackets.

In a pinch the rear defog, some VW (old beetle) 4-way lights and VW gas heater switch are all the same except for the symbol insert.

Below is the Install and wiring instructions

I did this on my '73. It's simple. Get the OG ones. There is almost always a set for sale here from Pcaggr(??) on the For Sale board. The bolts are already there, and they fit like a glove. The wiring is trickier, but not hard either. (so I've heard) Mine are in, but not hooked up. I asked here about what I should look for under the dash. No lights until I can get it to a shop.

I just did this on my car last weekend. My car even had the fog light wiring cut out from the previous owner.

Just locate the white with yellow stripes wire in the front trunk, and that is your fog power wire. You can utilize factory ground, or just ground to the chassis where you see fit right near the light.

You will need to remove the front valance and bumper for ease of installation.

I'm thinking about upgrading mine to the Pilot ones, I'd be happy to sell the old ones to you, not sure how much yet, but I will get pictures and figure up a reasonable price. Work fine but lenses are a little foggy.

"Upgrading"? Define that, please.

Good point. What I should have said was...

I'm thinking about going with more modern looking lights to fit my Subaru build theme. My car isn't really a good candidate for restoration, so I'd rather sell my current ones to fund what I'm working on now and worry about fog lights sometime in the distant future when I get the car back on the road.

Double the power, I'd call it an upgrade, but that's just my personal opinion.

You can get them from a FLAPS and make your own brackets or they are $80 with SS brackets here:

I think that what the good Cap'n is alluding to is that lights mounted in the fog light location should be fog lights, not driving lights, which should be mounted higher. I am not an expert on the subject, so I will give a link with the explanation.

Mehhhh... I like them, they still work good. I guess I'm one of those country bumkins looking for deer.

But then I use them for daylight driving lights as well...I'm such a blasphemer.

What is the problem with putting driving lights in the fog light location? Is it a question of effectiveness when mounted that low? Or the issue of originality? I have to admit the stock headlights in my car are pretty dim; it would be great to have more candlepower, especially with my old eyes!

Too low for good driving lights, completely useless during foggy conditions, illegal in most locations.

Check out the link that I put in post #12 above. It explains the characteristics which distinguish the two.

In a nutshell, what the Cap'n is saying in his less-is-more fashion is that if you mount driving lights low and aim them such that they are enhancing your nighttime visibility, you will be blinding other drivers (and thus illegal if you care about such things). They are designed to be mounted higher and aimed down. If you buy driving lights with the intent of using them as fog lights, it will also be a fail because the beam patterns are completely different, and the driving lights will actually diminish your visibility in foggy conditions because the light will reflect off the fog rather than pierce through it.

Crusty is like a college professor with tenure. When he smacks you down on something, he won't give you the answer, rather he expects that the better students will take the bait and go find the answer. Far more often than not, he is right. As for the students who don't take his advice, don't expect much compassion from him here. However, on the rare occasions when he has been persuaded that he has been ill-informed, he is most gracious in learning something new (unlike a tenured professor).

Just tried to purchase a set of the Pilot lights from Camp and he refunded my money with the explanation that he can no longer get decent pricing on the lights. Automobile Atlanta has the set though at a higher price than Camp used to market them for.

Added Euro H4s with 80/110s for headlights with relays - what an improvement. Since fogs are useless around here, put in the pilot drivers in the fog pods and in conjunction with the high beams turn night into day.
